Our Community

Third Street Preschool is enriched by its strong association with the Third Street Music School Settlement. Through our participation in the Music School, students enjoy a breadth of quality music related opportunities, including Instrument Introductions, the Preschool Instrument Program, and frequent “drop-in” opportunities to dance and band rehearsals.

We are enormously proud to be a part of this organization which, in itself, is a community school, offering access to interested musicians regardless of age, ability or financial capacity. In addition to the Preschool, Third Street Music School includes a large Music and Dance Program that offers instrument lessons, early childhood music and movement classes, chorus, ensemble, band and musical theatre opportunities. As Preschool students head for home each day, after-school students arrive carrying their sheet music, violins and guitars. At this time, and on the weekends, Third Street becomes a music school.

Additionally, the School’s Third Street Partners Program provides subsidized music and movement instruction within 25 NYC public schools and community centers with the support of generous foundations, corporations, and individual donors.

St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery opens its magical gated garden to preschool classes, providing children with opportunities to plant, play, and just listen to stories in a natural, verdant setting. Preschool families are happy to beautify and maintain this block-long space during Saturday “Family Gardening Days.” Our children also make good use of the new Learning Garden on the Preschool’s second floor.

Finally, we consider our neighborhood a part of the Preschool community, as classes venture forth to learn first-hand how their world works. We enjoy a close relationship with the Ottendorfer Library Children’s Librarian, and Kendra Tyson, the Children’s Librarian and Media Specialist from NYU. Our classes learn to make bagels, pizza and dumplings in nearby restaurants, and are invited “behind the scenes” in the post office and movie theater.
