A Day In The Life
Older three- and younger four-year-olds begin each day with a lively meeting conversation. Led by their teacher, it is designed to stretch their thinking and ignite new curiosity. Topics vary with children’s interests: How do snails eat? What does it mean to ‘celebrate’? How many seeds do you think are in this apple? Who remembers what ingredients we used to make bread?
Whether their day is three or six hours, it is rich in opportunities for concrete discovery and thoughtful activity. Carrie helps Loren create a shape pattern. Zach mixes red and yellow paint. Angie builds a tall block tower. Lucy watches as a snail nibbles on a leaf. Cameron and Josh play family.
Through these firsthand exploratory experiences, children grow as independent learners and caring friends. They work on their own and in small groups, with a teacher and independently. In addition to classroom projects, preschoolers enjoy lively drum circles, music and movement classes and community sing-alongs. They travel to the garden and sit in on a band rehearsal.
Because teachers respond sensitively to each and every preschooler, because they know that play is the work of young children, and because they encourage inquiry and resourcefulness, the classroom environment is vibrant, caring and creative.
